The report said that South Korea had been overtaken by China in LCD before, and now China is playing catch-up in OLCD. In 2019, South Korea was 11 percentage points ahead of China in the global market share of display screens. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the global demand for LCD screens, including TVS and tablets, soared and LCD prices soared. As a result, China's market share in terms of price also increased. China's market share in the global LCD display market is expected to reach 60.7 percent this year, far surpassing That of South Korea and Taiwan.

Omnia's statistics show that China's global OLCD market share, which was only 5% in 2018, will increase to 15% this year and 27% next year. Korea s share of the smartphone OLCD market is expected to drop from 80 percent to 60 percent next year.

According to market research firm DSCC, Boe, China's largest display maker, posted sales of $7.7 billion and profits of $1.4 billion in the first quarter of this year, overtaking Samsung Display and LG Display to become the world's no. 1 company in both sales and profits for the first time. Lee Shin-doo, a professor at Seoul National University in South Korea, said Chinese display companies were "growing formidably" thanks to government support and a large and diverse domestic market for display screens, including home appliances and IT companies such as TCL, the world's third-largest TV maker. The Korean industry wants the government to increase corporate assistance in the development of QD display and green and super quality display technology, and accelerate the training and introduction of talents in related fields, so as to maintain the global competitiveness of the Korean display industry.
